When you import music, you "bring it in" from somewhere and put it somewhere else. For example, you import the files from your external hard drive into your computer. They are not yet in your iTunes Library though. For example, you can keep music imported from CDs on your computer and save your video files on an external storage device.
Tip: When you drag files to the iTunes window, you can temporarily reverse the checkbox setting by holding down the Alt key while you drag. After that, you will see the audiobook is imported to your iTunes.
